Consistency and resilience in the PhD journey- James, Uganda

As I reflect on my PhD journey, I realize that consistency and resilience have been my guiding lights. I started my journey in 2022 by attending online discussions about PhD writing. From there, I consulted some scholars in my field to seek their guidance on areas for research. I also learned that research journey requires consistency and collaboration. At this point, My PhD journey has been a rollercoaster ride, but one thing has remained constant – my determination to push through challenges. So, One day, I joined the PHD session to listen and learn few things in academic writing. I also attended online academic training, attending conferences, and online platforms like Africana Research Club for daily research tips and sessions. More importantly is that the PhD journey is not for the faint of heart, but with consistency and resilience, I’ve learned to navigate its twists and turns. This boosted my research confidence and grow my critical thinking and writing skills. In addition, I also sought advice from workplace colleagues for their inputs about emerging research areas. As I look back on my PhD journey from two years, I’m reminded that consistency and resilience are just as important as intellectual curiosity. In this sense, I learned to develop my research plan, identified research topics to focus on, and bought a laptop and internet connection in my home. However, you must be ready to face the terrain in this journey. For example, discuss with your family to give you support when things get tough. Second, Identify two to three friends to discuss your research when you feel lonely. Third, talk to your supervisors when you fail to break through the ceiling. Fourth, don’t die alone, die with others. Fifth, don’t die and leave your PhD. Other things should consider in this journey, please have one day in a week for resting, have enough time for your family, play with your children as a way of relaxing and get out of stress. In short, always have a starting point, it might be hard to move forward, pause and reflect on your journey. I have learned that always talk to people who can listen to you in case of tough times in your journey. To anyone embarking on a PhD journey, I say this: consistency and resilience will be your greatest allies – nurture them, and you’ll reach your goals. In the end, it’s not about being perfect; it’s about being persistent and adaptable – that’s the key to success in a PhD program.
